FREQUENTLY ASK QUESTIONS

Q. I am assisting with moving an elderly couple from an apartment in Vancouver to assisted living in Vancouver Island...cost is very important as these people are pensioners. Do you have a rate so they will only have to pay one way from Vancouver to the island? Or will they have to pay for a truck to return empty?

A. Island Moving is a family owned & operated company based on Vancouver Island, with no other offices or trucks on the Mainland. This keeps our rates affordable and competitive, and our customers are able to reach Island Moving staff (not an answering service or phone tree) at any time. Our professional movers would be happy to come from the Island to the Mainland to pick up the couple's household items, and move them to their new residence on the Island. Long distance moves such as this are charged on a flat-fee rate (not hourly).

Please contact us directly at islandmoving@shaw.ca or (250) 383-5376 for details & an estimate.

Q. Please tell me if you take furniture apart and put it back together when moved (ie. beds, dressers), and what do you do when you pack 35 in. televisions?

A. Yes, our moving staff will disassemble and reassemble any furniture items you specify. Keep in mind that moving services are charged out by time (hourly rates), and disassembly/assembly time will increase the cost of your move. Large televisions are packed in secure boxes and/or wrapped with furniture pads as necessary, and fastened securely in the moving truck.

Q. How do you charge - is it by weight when moving from Calgary, Alberta to Vancouver Island? Also, can you recommend a storage place for all household furniture being moved?

A. Yes, the move is charged by weight, and the price can vary depending on date (mid month rate is discounted). We give "flat rate estimates" based on total travel distance, including ferry costs (to/from the Island), fuel, labour costs (2 or 3 men), and time. Household furniture moving to Vancouver Island can be stored in Island Moving's fully secure storage facility. Storage costs depend on square footage required.

Q. Why do apartment moves sometimes cost more than house moves?

A. A 3 bedroom rancher may take less time than a 1 bedroom apartment based on the variables below. A flat driveway close to the house, easy access for truck & movers, and no stairs...all add up to faster loading time, therefore saving you money.

There are many variables involved, such as: location of your apartment unit (anything above the ground floor takes extra loading/unloading time); elevator usage (elevators are small and can only fit one or two pieces of furniture at a time, and if others in the building are moving on the same day this can make for delays while waiting for the elevator); stairways - if the movers must use the stairs, this also takes extra time especially if the stairs are narrow or curved; obstacles in driveway area (ie. low overhangs which prevent access for the large moving truck) can translate into further distance/additional time spent walking to and from the truck to load it; date of month (are there many people moving that day? Traffic in hallways/elevators can cause delays in your move.)

Q. How can I save myself money on my move?

A. Island Moving staff are available for packing your belongings, but if you wish to save money and do this yourself, please ensure all breakables are carefully padded and secured in strong boxes. Please advise us when you are booking your move of who will be packing - if you wish to have Island Moving staff prepare your belongings for the move, this will take extra time; the move will be scheduled (and charged) accordingly.

The saying "Time is Money" rings true when services are charged by the hour. Every extra box or question asked will add up to 5 or 10 minutes here and there, turning into an extra hour or more by the end of the day.

Booking the move for a less busy time of month can mean discounts for you. Typically, the 30th, 31st, 1st and 2nd are the busiest days of each month, and bookings on these popular days are charged our regular rates. These busy days often cause traffic-jams in apartment and condo hallways, adding to the time the movers are required to be there.

Being prepared and aware will leave you with more savings in your pocket.

Q. What is and is not covered under Island Moving's insurance?

A. As outlined on our legal Bill of Lading, Island Moving has insurance to cover most household items. However, precious items such as collectables, jewellery, and money are NOT covered by insurance, and are moved at your own risk. We strongly recommend moving these items yourself if at all possible. Marking the boxes with "Fragile" or "Breakable" will ensure the utmost caution is taken when moving these valuables, and will ensure you are able to easily keep track of where these precious items are.

Please check your own homeowner's policy for special coverage of your valuables.

Island Moving will not be held liable for loss or damage to any collectables, jewellery, or money. Our regular insurance policy for household items offers 60 cents per pound on any damaged item. For incidents that may occur, as per our solid reputation and our commitment with the BBB, our staff and management will take the time to rectify the situation immediately.

Q. Are Island Moving staff bonded?

A. Our staff are professional, trustworthy, and are bondable. Island Moving has been in business since 1989, and has an excellent reputation for not only efficiently and professionally delivering your household or office items from point A to point B, but also delivering quality service to each and every customer.

We have moved and stored items for the RCMP, the world-famous Empress Hotel, and other well known and reputable businesses and individuals. Island Moving also has contracts with Provincial Government ministries for moving and storage of office furniture.
