BENEFITS OF PROPANE & BIODIESEL
![]()
PROPANE - An Environmentally Friendly Fuel
The millions of tons of coal burned at
coal-fired steam plants in the production of electricity emit toxic sulphur and
nitrogen oxides, contributors to the "greenhouse effect" and acid rain. In order
for steam plant emissions to meet the standards for clean air set by Environment
Canada, the government requires these plants to implement pollution control
devices called "scrubbers" to de-sulphur fuel gases. These devices affect the
efficiency of the plants, and double the amount of solid wastes they produce.
The emissions that are produced by clean-burning propane easily meet
Environment Canada's standards for clean air, and are not as harmful to the
environment. With propane's simple molecular composition, propane-fuelled
vehicles emit significantly lower levels of toxic emissions, carbon monoxide,
hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides than gasoline-fuelled vehicles.
Propane meets standards for reducing acid rain and controlling air pollution in urban areas. In fact, the US Clean Air Act Amendments heralds propane as one of the solutions to a cleaner, healthier environment. And since propane vaporizes rapidly, it won't contaminate soil or groundwater.
Environmentally friendly propane is the fuel of
choice for many business and municipal fleets. Increasingly, park service
vehicles, police cars, school buses and taxis are also converting to propane
power. Also deemed a "safe" fuel source, a propane fuel tank is 20 times more
puncture-resistant than a typical gasoline or diesel tank.
BIODIESEL - An Environmentally Friendly Fuel
Biodiesel is a cleaner burning alternative to fossil
fuels. It is produced from domestic renewable resources such as vegetable oils
and fats. It is a methyl ester which contains no petroleum, but can be blended
in any amount with petroleum diesel or used at 100% concentration.
In North America, virgin
soybean and canola oils are the most common sources for biodiesel. Other sources
may include recycled bio-oils collected from the food service and fish and meat
processing industries. This provides an economic benefit to many local
communities, provides a solution for what to do with these already-existing
waste products, and decreases our dependence on fossil fuels. There is also a
dramatic drop in many of the emissions from petroleum-fuelled vehicles such as
carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, sulphur and particulate
matter, many of which are a cause of climate change, cancer and respiratory
disease.
Biodiesel is non-toxic, biodegradable and virtually free of sulphur and
aromatics.
Island Moving proudly uses Biodiesel from
Columbia Fuels.
